Please support WWF Malaysia - For Our Future Generations

Do support the WWF Malaysia in whatever way you can. It does not necessary always have to be money, though that would help a lot too. Help by spreading awareness, Help by constantly reminding.

I happened to be TV channel surfing a few evenings ago and managed to catch the interview with Al Gore on the documentary film about global warming "Inconvenient Truth". If that was not a wake up call, I don't know what is.

This is the comment by janos451 from San Francisco with regards to the documentary

"Is Al Gore is doing a Chicken Little act in "An Inconvenient Truth"? I wish he were. This stunning documentary about global warming is a well-reasoned, clearly-proved, intelligent, cogent, irresistible torrent of scientific data, in a curiously warm, engaging, often funny presentation. What an entertaining horror movie this is! Unexpectedly, improbably, Gore is doing a Hitchcock act here, all affable and chummy... before scaring the hell out of the audience. And that he does, with charts, statistics, projections coming from hundreds of peer-reviewed studies, none challenged, while allowing how some 50% of mass-media treatment of global warming *is* subject to questions. There is even a cute animation segment about exaggerated global-warming claims. There is no need to exaggerate. Unchallenged studies are showing an extraordinary rise in ocean temperatures, the disappearance of glaciers, the melting of the poles - and then Gore twists the knife with a series of graphics showing areas to be inundated by rising waters. In a flooded Manhattan of the future, Gore says, the site of the World Trade Center will be under water. "Terrorism," he says, without drama or overemphasis, "is not the only danger we must face." The threatened catastrophe is not in the distant future. The US Geological Survey predicts that by 2030, Glacier National Park will have no glaciers left. In the last 30 years, 400,00 square miles of Arctic sea ice have melted; polar bears today drown when they cannot find an ice floe to rest on. What has Congress done about global warming? Absolutely nothing. Davis Guggenheim's documentary is based mostly on Gore's multimedia presentation on climate change, a lecture he has delivered hundreds of times in recent months. While Gore is managing the show with powerful efficiency, there is nothing dry or tired about it. The film is virtually flawless, even some of the cornier visuals fit in. Gore's personal remarks are affecting: the death of his sister from lung cancer, after lifelong smoking, forced the family - after generations of tobacco-growing in Tennessee - to quit the business. No overt statement is heard, but there is an inevitable comparison with the world's addiction to many activities directly contributing to climate change. Political references are at a minimum. The only strong criticism of the Bush presidency is in the context of the Republican rejection of the Kyoto Treaty, making the US one of two countries in the world to do so (Australia is the other one). Following a huge list of countries paying at least lip service to the cause of climate control under the treaty, Gore shows a similarly large list of US cities where local government is taking measures not supported by Washington. Gore is clear about the danger of being overwhelmed by the danger of what's happening, and he concludes the film by saying that going from denial to despair without pausing to see what can be done is the wrong course of action, or rather inaction. "Political will," Gore says, "is a renewable resource." Gently, but firmly, he calls for attention to a clear and present danger that cannot be ignored... even if faith-based denial of the evidence before us remains largely the order of the day, with all the comfort of darkness behind closed eyes. An alternative is at http://www.climatecrisis.net/."

And before this, I was at Arch Lancer's blog and when I saw his Infra Red Photos, that was kinda of scary. My comment to him was this : "i find some of the photos quite disturbing..it is like what we could see happen to our mother earth if we continue to pollute and not care about the environment. brrr…scary but good to wake us up to this fact that we are responsible to keep our earth safe, clean and beautiful".

So peeps, if you could, please help save this mother earth of ours, if not for ourselves, for our future generations... :)

Satay Kajang Hj. Samuri

I was with my family in Kajang recently and we wanted to have satay there. We normally frequent the old place near the Shell Petrol Station but one of my brothers suggested this place called Sate Kajang Hj Samuri. According to him, it is quite good. Hrrummph...we found out that he had an ulterior motive too....haha.. trying to sell them some POS system or something like that.

We have not even ordered the food yet and I was totally impressed with the place. It was like a mini-museum as there were many antiques decorating the place. We parked the cars at the back of the restaurant and got in via the side entrance. Hence, I didn't realize that there were so many more items up front until we finished eating and my brother asked me to go to the front to have a look. Wow.. I totally like what the owner did to preserve and showcase these items.

Oh yeah, the satay was great too. The mee Hainam was a tad too spicy for my liking though.

When You Mum Has High Expectations

Recently, I have taken a lesson on Cake Baking and Decoration and have brought home some of the results to show mum. When she saw them, she suggested to me that since my niece (8yrs old) and nephew (3yrs old) are normally dropped off at her house on Friday afternoons to stay until my brother comes to fetch them at 9ish in the night, she has trouble keeping them out of trouble and usually food does help keep them occupied and out of mischief. So, she asked me to bake these cupcakes and decorate them for the kiddos when they come around this Friday..... which is today.

I told her "Mum.. those cupcakes/muffins which I took back from class.... err.. they may be nice to see.. but they are awful to eat". Her answer was "You "kow tim" it lah" meaning, you fix it lah.. so that the kiddos will eat. And people wonder why my mum's ring tone on my phone is "Mission Impossible".

As I am one of those people who "takes the cake" (pun intended) for procrastinating, I only thought about what I will do about this cake/muffin business as I was going home after work yesterday evening. Sigh... all I know how to do after the class were royal icing and the fondant... which both takes a lot of time to make and plenty of skills to create....sigh....

First thing I did when I got home was to have a quick dinner and started on the cupcakes. Did 2 batches of mini cupcakes and finished the remaining as regular sized muffins with a little blueberry fillings in the center. Dare not put too much jam in case they started leaking out.

Whilst the cupcakes were baking in the oven, dug out everything I've got in the kitchen cabinet. OK, I told myself, what do kids like....sweets, sweets and anything sweet. I've got plenty of those as I have a sweet tooth myself *grins*. No.. no... I've got sweet teeth.. I love all things sweet.

Bare Naked Cupcakes

Then I remembered that I've got a simple recipe for butter cream. Luckily I've still got plenty of butter and icing sugar. Quickly set about doing a simple batch of butter cream and colored it pink... my niece's favorite color.

When the cupcakes were done and out of the oven, I was ready to put my "artistic" abilities into work..*har har*. With what little skills I have and I didn't use any of the ideas from class (as the theme was festive), I decided..what the heck...just "bantai aja". (come what may).

Cupcakes all dressed up with nowhere to go...

This batch is for my other nephew who will be coming on Saturday. He is 12yrs old and he is a rather picky eater.. hence.. needs more complicated bait

Well, managed to get out some reasonably passable cupcakes that will con the children. After that was done, the real fun began for me. Ha Ha.. did I mention that I love playing "masak-masak" (cooking). This will be my very first time playing with butter cream and piping. Since I've only got 2 miserable pipe designs, this is all I managed to come up with. Oh well, I am still looking out for a Cake Decoration Class... reasonably priced one yeah.. please let me know. Thanks!

How to Stop a Cough in 5 mins

My friends and business associates, Zul and Fathiah sent me this home remedy that is supposedly very effective in stopping coughs. This is truly something worth sharing. Apparently, this has been tried and tested and confirmed to work. Furthermore, the technique used here is external, so, honestly, no harm trying.

This is what they sent in their email to me....

We have all been kept awake by our own or someone else's cough. Try this and pass it on. The tip and not the cough. ANYTHING is better than antibiotics. Even babies could benefit from this and the parents wouldn't worry about the safety of their child. And of course, it is harmless and free from any type of side-effects. WOW! I was raised, and raised my kids with Vicks. How come I never knew this? I can't wait for my next cough. Amazing! READ IT ALL. It works 100 percent of the time, although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.

Treatment: To stop night time coughing in a child (or an adult, as we found out personally), put Vicks Vapor Rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime and then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about five minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. This works 100 percent of the time, and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children, as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure. I just happened to tune in to a.m. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs, so I listened. It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, and in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago, and it worked 100 percent! She said it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her. The coughing stopped in a few minutes, and believe me this was a deep (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds, uncontrollable cough and she slept cough-free for hours every night she used it. If you have children or grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed.

How You Can Have Your Own Japanese Meal at Home

I simply love Japanese Food but too much of it can "kill" your wallet *sob*. Then I found out that you cook your own Japanese meal at home and that would save you a little (but that could also depend on what you choose to cook). Let me see if I can recall how much I have spent on such a meal at home.

I made this simple fare at home but of course there were some dishes where I would not have a clue as to where to source for the raw product or how to make.

Ignoring the cost of the rice, sauces, seasonings and oil, lets have a look to see how much the meal did actually cost me.

2 eggs for the omelette (RM0.60)

Unagi bought from the supermarket (RM10.90)

Mackeral also from the supermarket (RM6.90)

2 packets of Miso Soup (RM2.60) from a large bag of 10s.

Prawns (RM6), baby squids(RM1.11), snow peas (RM1), 1 carrot (RM0.80) and some leftover capsicum cooked in Teriyaki sauce

Total cost of this meal was approximately RM30.00

Can lah.. but mind you, nothing fancy here.. just homemade and ready made food all the way :)

KAM....IN YOUR FACE

This show ah die die also I will watch.... this "KAM...IN YOUR FACE". Yup, this is a musical/comedy show and several of my friends are in this production.. heehee.. this is the part where I start to ...ahem name drop...not that this is going to earn me a complimentary seat or anything. Maybe a wave from the stage.. maybe a hug off the stage... I take anything they throw at me.... preferably a feel meal after all the $$$ they rake in at the end of the show haha. My friends Jeremy Ho (Soon Yoon) and Fang Chyi are part of the team. Hope to get to know more of the actors and add them to my friends list after the show (*smirk*). Do pop by their very own blog too and you will see great behind-the-scenes photos... and some of their photos are really goofy photos (no insult to goofy.. but come to think of it, some of them were even more goofy than goofy himself *heehee*).

The synopsis for this was extracted from The Actors Studio.

Kam…In Your Face is a musical-comedy-cabaret combining song and dance, stand-up comedy and skits with a generous amount of local wit & humour, a spoonful of intellect a dash of Bollywood, a splice of rock n roll and disco, loads of fun and just enough of risqué to spice up the show. Joanne Kam, who is supported by her stellar cast of actors and dancers, will make you kam…in your face…with laughter! Starring: Joanne Kam, Douglas Lim, Susan Lankester, Fang Chyi, Ina Fabregas, Ho Soon Yoon, Malik Taufiq, Ash Nair & Gavin Yap Directed & Written by Joanne Kam & Gavin Yap Music Producers: John Darren Morelli & Reuben Valentine Choreographer: Jane Victor Soldberg Executive Producers: Joanne Kam & Angeline Teoh Presenter: Toniq Creative Management Sdn Bhd Dates & Times: 1-4, 6-11 May @ 8.30pm Tickets: RM62, RM82, RM102 (plus RM2 ticket fee) RM62 for students (with valid ID), 20% concession for sr. citizens Venue: TAS @ BSC

RACE - 4 Original Short Plays

It has been a long time since I've been to watch a local production or play or musical or anything for that matter but not due to the lack of them. I am sure you will find that there is quite a selection if you know where to surf. But I am rather selective about what I watch and most of the time, if my friends are in the production, whether as an actor or a music director or the lightning director, whatever lah.. as long as they have a finger or toe in there, I am watching that piece :).

Well, there will be 2 of such that will be coming up just round the corner. And I would like to see if anyone would like to come along and we can make it a eat first and be entertained later night... so how about it ;)

The first one is a 4 short stories production entitled RACE - Empat Cerita Pendek (4 Original Short Plays). The synopsis has been extracted from KLPac's site. The presenters of this are KLPac and Rather Peculiar Theatre.

RACE

- Four Original Short Plays

'Race' came about after writers were asked to write/devise a 15-minute piece from the word ‘race’. The results have been wonderful! Playing with the word 'race', four writers came up with four short pieces:

Ridzwan Othman (Winner, Best English Play, BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005) tells the parable of a girl, Sarah, playing scrabble in her school. Angsa is not really a comedy, especially for her parents and teacher. Or is it?

Singer-songwriter, Shanon Shah (Winner, AIM Best Male Vocalist 2006) shares some gossip with Once You Pop, You Just Can't Stop! (Sekali Dah Mula, Susah Nak Berhenti). Two neighbours, Puan Farah and Mrs Nathan just can't stop yakking. These housewives seem to understand and misunderstand each other. Oh dear.

Fauzuly Hamdan Tahir (D'boy), (Best Student 2005, 2006, 2007 ASWARA National Arts Academy Theatre Faculty) sets Up & Down, Satu Mini Muzikal, in a detention class: four students, playing Snakes & Ladders. Apparently there's some singing involved. In Bahasa Malaysia.

Fresh from a South Korean cultural exchange program, Kimmy Kiew seeks new challenge in her devised piece. One In A Billion: the trials of a team desperate to win a billion dollars: in a marching competition. Each participant's predicament is compounded by the lack of a good captain. Sedia! Cepat Berjalan!

KLPac presents a Rather Peculiar Theatre (RPT) production.

Venue : Pentas 2, KLPac Duration : 23 - 27 April 2008
Category : Drama Price : RM35 & RM25 (students, sr. citizens, the disabled & Sat Matinee) - TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

A Piece of Choc Cheese Cake to Chase Away the Blues

During my morning ritual of running through some of my favorite blogs before I start work, I noticed that some of my dear friends are not really that happy today. Firstly, I know for a fact, after posting in my other blog about how terrible it was for bloggers to pilfer contents and pictures from other bloggers, my friend babe experienced just that. Babe's was so much worse as the "thief" is non-other than.... oh dear.. The Star!! And according to babe, after her email inquiry has gone to the editor, they conveniently removed the clip...sigh...

Then went over to fishmandiary's blog.. yikes.. he is having a mood swing.. and it is swinging in a not so nice direction. Too bad he had to work late..... again.. coz I invited him to have a little supper cum bitching session (ya ya.. if a guy can have mood swings, he can jolly well bitch too), else he might have felt just that little better. Furthermore, I had a little sweet temptation of a chocolate cheesecake that might just have chased a bit of the blues away.

But then again it might not have done that.. he might have even been worse off ..why, you asked. Coz I met up JW despite fishmandiary not being able show up and gave her some of the cake....

I gave her about this many and also she ate fishmandiary's share at McD (2 pieces) and this morning, when i popped into her blog, I saw this....

Woman is having a headache.... yikes.. I hope this has nothing to do with the cake???

BTW: note how the cake pictures have been defaced with that awful text (snigger snigger), this is to make sure nobody steals my photos... not that they are anywhere worth considered to be stolen.. but just to prove a point..(smirk).

Have a better 2nd half of the day my friends.... hugs.....

Iron Man & Hell Boy

I was at the movies a couple of weeks back to watch Spiderwick's Chronicles and Nim's Island and got to watch the trailers for Iron Man and Hell Boy II - The Golden Army. I know it is likely that I will be watching both but I have a feeling I will enjoy Hell Boy just that little bit more. Just a feeling but I suppose after watching the trailer, Hell Boy movie seems a lot darker and more "filling" visually. Oh well, to each his own. What about you? Are you going to watch any, if not both? Have a go at the trailers below.

The Day When Hell (Kuala Lumpur) Freezes Over

Ha ha.. when I first heard it, I didn't believe it. A friend mentioned it last week in passing and I really didn't think much of it. Then again I saw it in Facebook and seriously I thought to myself, haha..Asians, especially KLites, will be game to do this sort of thing meh..

Then I heard it over RED FM yesterday when the Radio DJs talked about the Freeze. Tried to search it in the newspapers but could not find it. And this morning, my friend Tobiyama sent this site over via MSN "The day Kuala Lumpur froze". Watched the video and wished I was there :(. It was so cool. Have a look at the video and at the same time, have a look at the same thing that was done in Grand Central Station and Trafalga Square. They are sooooo cool lah.

Sore Eyes - Conjunctivitis

I came to work last Thursday but my eyes were terribly itchy. However, I had a meeting at 10am, so I decided to go for the meeting before I went to see the company clinic. By that time, the itched progressed to slight tearing, which was kind of sticky. On one look, the doctor diagnosed Conjunctivitis - which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a fairly common condition and usually causes no danger to the eye or your child's vision. The inflammation can have many causes, the most common of which are infectious, allergic, and irritant.

Picture obtained from a Medical-Pictures.com

Thursday and Friday was spent mostly resting as the doctor gave some allergy pills which really sent one to sleep. In fact, I slept more in those two days than I did for the last two weeks so much so that my dark circles under the eyes improved so much.

Anyway, I had a picture taken last night and it has been quite an improvement. Still some red veins left but no more itch or tearing. I suspect the infectious period is over... so it is back to blogging..... ahem.. I mean work today.

Omitsu Koshi Japanese Restaurant

Have been my own test rabbit for my home cooked meals and seriously getting a mite bored and tired of eating my experiments :). So, yesterday, decided to go out for dinner. Went with a Japanese food buff friend and we decided to go for something a little authentic and not the Japanese fast foods places like Sakae or Sushi or Genki... not that I am saying that they are no good... just wanted something a little different but reasonably priced at the same time.

I have eaten at this little Japanese Restaurant several times before and I really enjoyed the little place. It is tucked away along Jalan SS 22/23 Damansara Jaya, facing Atria Damansara. If you drive along the inner circle, this Restaurant is several shoplots before you reach Public Bank. The name of this Restaurant is not visible outside or it was kind of small that I actually missed it but it is located below very large signboard which reads Beauty Haven.

They have a large selection of Bento Sets and ala Cartes on their menu and the portions are quite adequate, even for a big eater like me. We just ordered a set each and one of my favorite tofu side orders, Age Dashi Tofu.

Age Dashi Tofu (RM6)

Teppan Salmon Set (RM20) complete with miso soup and rice

Sashimi Bento (RM26) comes with miso soup, cawan mushi and rice

With 1 added Gohan (white rice), the bill came up to RM60.95 and that was inclusive of taxes. A very lovely fussy free meal. We arrived at about 7:30pm and since it was a weekday, we didn't bother to make reservations. But if you intend to go on a weekend, I would advice you to as the little Restaurant is kinda tiny with limited seats.

Location:

Qing Ming Time - Wonder if Dad Gets the Stuff??

It is that time of the year again, Qing Ming (Cheng Beng) festival, which is the Chinese equivalent of the All Souls Day. The actual date is the 4th of April this year and that being a Friday, most of us were not willing to take a day off from work to go visit Dad at Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih. So teruk hor? Where is the filial piety? Ha ha.. Dad is very forgiving lah.. what the difference in a day.. anyways, mum says we have 10 days before and 10 days after the 4th of April to make the visit. We decided to do it on the 5th, the day after.

A house for Dad

Sometimes I wonder if those who have passed on actually receives all those paper paraphernalia that we burn. Filial piety should be done whilst the person is still alive and kicking and not after he or she has passed on. Sometimes doing that (my personal opinion) is to show others how filial a son or a daughter we are when we burn tonnes of these paper stuff to them after they are gone. In fact, I'll always wondered to myself, does Dad get all these stuff that we burn? Do any of them get all the stuff that their loved ones burn for them?

A Maid and A Butler ??

Being a Buddhist, I have been taught that when we die, unless we have achieved enlightenment and is able to leave the circle of rebirth, there are 6 rebirth realms that we will come back to... shan't go into that but if you are interested to read more, then it is all here in Wiki. But whichever way, I am quite suspect as to whether those who have passed on will be able to receive these stuff that we burn each year. I personally believe that it would have been better to do charity work in the name of those departed so as merits can be accorded to them, thus improving their Karma.

I did ask several people about this and of course it will depend who I asked. Most practicing Buddhists would share the same opinion as myself. The shop selling the paper paraphernalia would definitely tell you that the departed will be able to receive these paper offerings. The shop will give you special maps and "envelopes" to put the name of the departed, the date and time of their demise, the offerer's name (mua) and their relationship with the departed (daughter). Sure can get.

My brother for sure believes that dad will get all the stuff that he burns each year. Since 2005 ( we were not allowed to go during the first Qing Ming - 2004 after his passing) until this year, my dear old brother has been burning a car each year for Dad. Each year, the car model got bigger until my Mum also cannot tahan liow. Told him that next year, if he burns another car, he'd better burn Dad a garage too.. buahaha.

2005 - A Japanese make, you think??

2006 - Don't know what model this one

2007 - A BMW

2008 - A Rolls

Anyways, really, if it can be proven that the departed are able to receive all these gifts that we "send" then I would like to start investing in my own ahem..well being.. when I leave this earth...now that they have the OSIM massage chair, I don't mind one as I cannot afford one during my lifetime...and a Ferrari, and a Bungalow, and a .......... (the list goes on).......(Mum thinks I am being morbid!)

Vampire Saga

I have not been doing much reading these days as most of my time was spent checking out blogs, reading recipe books, watching TV's wah lai toi (but after saying all that, still missed the last episode of To Grow With Love - with one of my favorite Chinese Actress Myolie Wu). This is the official website to To Grow With Love... but it does not help me, being a banana and all :(. Had to read the ending at Wikipedia.

Anyway, back to what I really wanted to talk about... and that is the latest book I am reading. I am not sure if this is really for the kids but are we not all kids at heart? I am currently reading the Saga of Darren Shan - Vampire Rites. My fascination started with the movie "Interview with The Vampire" where I would have minded very much to be bitten by a Brad Pitt Vampire or a Tom Cruise Vampire.. :D.

When I first chanced upon Darren's 1st book, Vampire Blood, I found it very interesting. Why? The book title read "Darren Shan - Vampire Blood" and the author of the book is Darren Shan. And when I read the book, it was like reading a real life story, a biography. From the first book, I was hooked.

This is from the first trilogy Vampire Blood which consists of 3 books ... The nightmare begins... The Cirque Du Freak trilogy comprising: Cirque Du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant and Tunnels of Blood. Join Darren Shan's descent into the darkness. CIRQUE DU FREAK Darren goes to a banned freak show with his best mate Steve. It's the wonderfully gothic Cirque Du Freak where weird, frightening half human/half animals appear who interact terrifyingly with the audience. After he sees the amazing performing spider, Madam Octa, Darren is determined to steal her. But his daring theft goes horribly wrong. The spider bites Steve and Darren has to sell his soul to an evil vampire to get the antidote. THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT Darren joins the vampire, Mr Crepsley, as his assistant and they return to the Cirque Du Freak. There, Darren makes friends with the snake-boy, Evra Von (who knows what Darren is) and a local boy, Sam, and RV, an eco-warrior and animal lover (who do not). Darren begins to enjoy his life among the Cirque performers as the youngest half-vampire in existence, but he defiantly refuses to drink human blood -- the whole idea sickens him -- and he tries desperately to cling on to the part of him which is human. TUNNELS OF BLOOD When Mr Crepsley is called upon by the Vampire Generals, Darren and the snake-boy, Evra Von, leave the Cirque Du Freak and travel with him to the city. Whilst there, Darren meets Debbie and his life as a Vampire's Assistant fades into the background -- until corpes are found. Corpses drained of blood... Suspicious of Mr Crepsley's secretive bahaviour, Darren and Evra shadow him across the city and confront a creature of the night who may be the end of them all..."

Have just finished reading the 2nd book...
This is as good if not even better than the 1st book. Now things are really getting hot.. can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd and 4th book soon... haha.. does this mean less time to experiment with my cooking? Nah.. food is still 1st priority in my list :)

Third Book

Last Book
